About the Artist

Eunice LaFate

As a Jamaican-born, self-taught artist, Eunice LaFate brings a rich blend of Caribbean vibrancy and American influences to her work.

Inspired by icons like Grandma Moses and Bill Taylor, LaFate has painted for over 20 years, using line, color, and abstract forms to reflect her vision. Her pieces celebrate human diversity, cultural heritage, and natural beauty, drawing on experiences in education and human services.

With styles ranging from traditional and contemporary to folk art, LaFate’s work captures everything from radiant landscapes to the spirit of everyday life, creating art that’s beautiful, relatable and deep.

Throughout my career, I’ve been incredibly grateful for the support and recognition from my community and peers.

This year, I contributed to HeArt of Caregiving, a catalog that highlights the intersection of art and compassion. This project followed my work in the 2013 documentary Arts As Prevention, which explored creativity’s role in fostering community well-being.

I have been honored to appear on the cover of various local publications. In 2020, I was named one of the Most Influential Delawareans by the News Journal.

In 2004, I was recognized at the Black Achievers in Business & Industry Award Banquet, and that same year, I received the Individual Artist Fellowship in Folk Arts & Crafts from the Delaware Division of Arts. Also, for over two decades, I’ve served as a speaker for the Delaware Humanities Forum.

Each of these experiences has been inspiring, and I’m thankful to keep learning, creating, and sharing art that resonates with others.
